ROLLED PAPER STYLE BYPASS
FILTERS |
|
| How These
Types of Filters Work |
|
Oil flows axially (lengthwise) through
the roll. Typically these filters fall into two
categories:
1. High-quality rolled filter paper,
wound on a central core, fit tightly into a cylindrical
container.
2. Commercially available toilet
paper or paper towel rolls, inserted into a cylindrical
container. |

Notice the passageways created by
pressure along the side of the filter element.
Passageways such
as these allow oil to detour around the filter, thereby
dramatically decreasing filter
performance. |

| Problems with
Rolled Paper Style Bypass Filters |
|
|
Limited to
"Surface" Filtration – an inability to trap particles of
successively smaller size.
Why
OilGuard is Superior: OilGuard employs a
method of both "surface" and "depth"
filtration
– achieved by winding a specially
blended yarn of cotton and cellulose in a precise diagonal
pattern around a perforated center tube.
Loading – filter blockage
from contaminants building up at the end of the roll which is
first exposed to oil flow.
Why
OilGuard is Superior: The OilGuard element features many
hundreds of identical, tapered (decreasing in size), spiral
passageways that trap successively smaller particles as oil
flows inward toward the center
core.
Poor Structural
Integrity – lack of strength between layers
exposing filters to channeling (large passageways created over
time) which eliminates filter
effectiveness.
Why OilGuard is
Superior: Structural Integrity – created and
maintained by locking the combed fibers of the filter in place
with each successive layer of winding. |

Frequent
Element Replacement and Costly Make-Up Oil Additions
– bypass filtration systems featuring
rolled paper
filters require more frequent element changes
than an OilGuard Bypass System. They are also much larger in
size comparison to OilGuard, and in effect
create an extra sump of oil that is
changed every time the roll of paper is
changed. This results in significant make-up
oil requirements. Some models require 15-30% of the sump
capacity of the engine in new make-up oil with each filter
element change. In effect, each element change is a partial
oil change. This constant dilution of the dirty oil with new
clean oil produces good oil analysis reports and gives the
illusion that the filter is working. The cost to the
owner/operator is much higher than when using
OilGuard.
Why OilGuard is
Superior: OilGuard allows you to truly save
money by extending your drain interval without the need for
significant make-up oil or added oil capacity in the filter
housing. OilGuard works by filtering the oil and keeping it
virtually contaminate free. The OilGuard housing was designed
specifically to house the filter element, not as an extra oil
sump. Our claims of cost savings are realized in the entirety,
as the owner/operator can safely double their
normal drain interval WITHOUT mid-duration element changes and
make-up oil. In many cases, extension beyond
doubling the interval can be safely
achieved.
System
Cost – rolled filter
bypass systems typically cost from the $300 to $550 range or more.
Why OilGuard is
Superior: No other bypass filtration system
currently available can compare to OilGuard.
Filter Element
Replacement Cost – Yes a roll of toilet paper or a roll
of paper towels is cheaper than an OilGuard element. But these
items were not designed or manufactured to be oil filters. You
wouldn’t use a high quality OilGuard element to dry off your
hands or take care of your bathroom business, and there is no
reason why you should use a common roll of paper towels or
toilet paper to filter your oil and protect your expensive
engine.
The filtration engineering and quality
standards that go into every OilGuard filter made, are not
even considered by the manufactures of toilet paper and paper
towels. The paper quality is not intended to hold up to the
combination of heat, pressure and loading of oil
contamination.
Why OilGuard is
Superior: OilGuard provides a specifically
engineered system of filtration and filter elements that were
designed for the task of filtering oil to 1
micron.
OilGuard's patented element is guaranteed to
deliver both reliability and performance at a cost lower than many other types of bypass filters. Each size is priced
dramatically less than elements used by other types of bypass
filters. |

Problems with
Commercially Available Toilet Paper or Paper Towel Rolls
Bypass Filters |
|
|
| This category is suseptible to each of
the above problems. Additionally, tissue manufacturers
DO NOT design these rolls
with the necessary tension and
dimensional control required to be a
filter. Simply put, it is not recommended to
utilize a product for something other than its original
purpose. |

OIL REFINER (Heating Element Bypass
Filters) |
|
|
| How These
Types of Filters Work |
|
|
| Some bypass filters feature a heated
chamber, also known as an evaporation chamber or plenum
chamber. In this design, oil first travels through the
filter’s medium, and then enters the evaporation chamber where
it is heated to 190º-200º. Manufacturers of this type of
system “theorize” that heating the oil to this level will
“flash off” water and fuel in the oil. They represent the
product as being an “oil refiner”. This is simply not
true. These filters are not oil refiners by any definition.
The process of oil refining does not occur within any of these
style filter products. |
|
|
| Problems with
Oil Refiner (Heating Element Bypass
Filters) |
|
|
Increased Cost and
Complexity – OilGuard believes that the heated
chamber feature increases cost without increasing performance.
Why?
A. 200º is not a high
enough temperature to boil-off water and/or coolant.
B. Oil temperatures
climb to 190º-200º in any engine that is run for 30 minutes or
longer.
Why OilGuard
is Superior: Less Cost – Equal or Superior
Performance. What most of the refiner style filters do
achieve is good, efficient particulate removal in the range of
1-3 microns. OilGuard accomplishes the same level of
filtration at 1/3 the product cost. OilGuard believes in the
power of simple yet elegant engineering. Our patented
design provides excellent performance without adding
unnecessary complexity. Oilguard does the job that needs
to be done, without all the bells and whistles that increase
cost without increasing
performance.
Electricity
Required – to power the heating element.
Why OilGuard is
Superior: No electricity
required.
Mounting
Restrictions – may apply to accommodate return oil
flow by gravity.
Why OilGuard is
Superior: No Mounting Restrictions – unit is
fully pressurized and can be mounted at any orientation.
Limited Lifespan
of Product – typically these units carry a
10-year warranty on the bypass filter system and a 5-year
warranty on the filter’s heating element.
Why OilGuard is
Superior: Life-Time Warranty – on all
OilGuard bypass filtration systems. |

CENTRIFUGE STYLE BYPASS
FILTERS |
|
|
| This type of device is really a
centrifugal separator, not a filter. Centrifuge designs
feature a non-pressurized housing that contains a rapidly
spinning basket. The spinning basket is driven by a turbine
that is powered by the pressurized oil flowing through the
engine. Particles, via centrifugal force, are separated from
the oil and flung to the wall of the basket where they adhere
and build up. |

Inability to
Separate Water from Engine Oil.
Why OilGuard is
Superior: Condensation Removal
– up to 100cc of condensation water.
Loss of
Filtration Efficiency – when operating at low engine speed
or in stop-start driving conditions.
Why OilGuard is
Superior: Consistent Filtration – low engine
speed or stop-start driving conditions do not decrease
filtration performance.
Cleaning of Rotating
Components – disassembly
required.
Why OilGuard is
Superior:
No moving parts.
Bearing and Seal
Replacement – periodically
required.
Why OilGuard is
Superior: No Bearing Replacement Required –
only replacement required at service is simple changing of
filter o-ring.
Mounting
Restrictions – may apply to accommodate return oil
flow by gravity.
Why OilGuard is
Superior: No Mounting Restrictions – unit is
fully pressurized and can be mounted at any orientation.
Compressed Air
Required – necessary to operate the flow
control valve.
Why OilGuard is
Superior: No Compressed Air Required – unit
does not contain a complex flow control
valve. |
